What is Futsal?

Tuesday, 03 November 2009

Futsal is a modified form of soccer played with five-a-side. This international sport acquired its name from the abbreviation of the Portugeuese words ‘futebol de salao’ (or Spanish ‘Futbol Sala’), which loosely translated means football indoors.

This small-sided sport offers players a unique opportunity to increase their ball skills due to a number of reasons:

1.       The Futsal pitch is smaller than football pitches which ensure that players are constantly involved throughout the match regardless of skill levels of the players involved. This ensures that each player gets more touches on the ball during every match (nearly twelve times more than playing football). Additionally, players are constantly playing in pressure situations where they will learn to receive and play the ball whilst being challenged.

2.        The Futsal ball is heavier and with a reduced bounce compared to a football. This means that players are required to play the ball properly using skill rather than the balls bounce, combine this with a smaller playing area and the ‘kick and chase’ games become obsolete with players required to rely on passing and skills to move up the pitch.

3.       The speed that Futsal is played at places considerable demand on technique, movement, tactical awareness and fitness. Quick reflexes, fast thinking and pinpoint passing are all enhanced through the playing of this sport.

Football Queensland are proud to recognise Futsal not only as an exciting sport in its own right, but sees the potential of using the sport as a development tool to enhance the quality of football players.
