Kirk wins QSport award
Monday, 07 December 2009

Gympie’s Trevor Kirk has capped off an incredible year by adding the Queensland Service to Sport Junior Award to his already brimming trophy cupboard.

Not only was Kirk named as Football Queensland’s Volunteer of the Year for 2009, but he then went on to win Football Federation Australia’s Volunteer of the Year Award for his long-time services to junior football in Gympie.

Football was also nominated in another four categories: Queensland Team of the Year (Brisbane Roar Women), Queensland Sport Administrator of the Year (Football Queensland CEO Geoff Foster), Queensland Service to Sport (Foster again) and Queensland Officiator of the Year (Jarred Gillett).

The Sports Federation of Queensland (QSport), along with the Courier Mail and Channel 7, also used the night to launch the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame.

Ten years ago, the top 100-post World War II Queensland sporting heroes, identified by an expert panel, were recognised at the fifth annual QSport Awards, and the selection panel resolved to induct those 100 as inaugural members of the Hall of Fame  and to add another 50.

This time around, the selection criteria were broadened so to include coaches, administrators and media who have played a significant role in Queensland sport.

Amongst the original 100 inducted was former Socceroos player and coach Frank Farina, while dual World Cup referee Mark Shields and the legendary Clem Jones AO were also added.

The former Lord Mayor of Brisbane’s contribution to Queensland’s football and sporting landscape is immeasurable, and he is also a Football Queensland Life Member.
